Sprint has just rolled out the new Motorola r765IS rugged phone for the company’s iDEN network. Sprint inherited the network when it acquired Nextel, but has long been accused of neglecting it, despite it having once had widespread popularity with taxi and construction companies, thanks to push-to-talk support. The Motorola r765IS meet MIL-STD-810F standard, means it can works a wide variety of conditions, include: low pressure for altitude testing; exposure to high and low temperatures plus temperature shock (both operating and in storage); rain (including wind blown and freezing rain); humidity, fungus, salt fog for rust testing; sand and dust exposure; explosive atmosphere; leakage; acceleration; shock and transport shock (i.e., triangle/sine/square wave shocks); gunfire vibration; and random vibration. As a cell phone, the Intrinsically Safe (IS) Motorola r765IS has a 130×130 64k color display, Bluetooth, MMS support, speakerphone, GPS receiver, and runs on iDEN 800/900 MHz network for Nextel Direct Connect, NextMail, interconnect including data. The Motorola r765IS is not cheap and Sprint will charge for about $2000.
